Friend, foe, or unknown force flying overhead? Congress should find out

Christopher Mellon served 20 years in the federal government and was deputy assistant Defense secretary for intelligence from 1999 to 2002, and for security and information operations from 1998 to 1999. From 2002 to 2004, he was minority staff director of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence under Sen. John Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.). He is a national security affairs adviser for To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science and a consultant to HISTORY’s nonfiction series, “Unidentified: Inside America’s UFO Investigation,” which premieres May 31.

A Canadian witness at Abbotsford, British Columbia, reported an object hovering over the roadway about the width of the two-lane road, according to testimony in Case 90803 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was driving down a “poorly lit road” at 8:40 p.m. (already dark) on March 15, 2018.

“I had another person with me at the time,” the witness stated. “At first I didn’t really pay much attention to the craft as I assumed it was an airplane in a distance. I started taking more notice as I continued driving as the air craft seemed to be quite low and what seemed to be slow moving. However, as I neared the air craft it was not moving at all. It was hovering in one spot directly over the road. It was hovering in one spot probably above the power lines (distance wise). I kept driving, but I slowed down as I was driving under it (directly under it). I told my companion, ‘that is no plane.’”

The witness described the object.

“It was a black color with lights (lights flashing like an airplane as that was the deception in the start). It was loud sounding as I passed under it (loud engine). It was a long-ish kind of shape in width that was about the same size as the width of the road (double lane road). It had some kind of strips of material fluttering off it. It was not a drone. I drove under it, but to be honest, I was tripping out a little bit in the moment as normally I am a very skeptical person. I drove up to the next street crossing (approximately a city block and-a-half) and did a U-turn as I was going to take pictures or a video etc. I sped back down the road but as I neared it again it left. It just seemed to look like just any other light in the sky within seconds. I don’t know for sure what it was. When I was under it, it was really the only time I could hear its engine. I couldn’t hear what it sounded like when it took off as I was speeding back toward it to take some pictures. All that I could really hear was my own engine speeding back towards it. I don’t know what it was, but it was not a drone or an airplane.”

An Alabama witness at Holly Pond reported watching a low-flying, triangle-shaped object, according to testimony in Case 97506 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
 
The witness was standing on his back porch drinking a cup of coffee at 4:30 a.m. on March 15, 2018.
 
“It flew directly into my field of site,” the witness stated. “I was looking towards the south and it flew directly in front of me. It has three round balls glowing, not casting light, and it was triangle in shape and on the very back on the top of the craft was a little blinking red light. It was completely silent and black, not regular black, but so black I couldn’t see details of its bottom. And on the back of it was two panels that looked like closed blinds.”

A Michigan witness at Port Huron reported a low-flying, rectangle-shaped object the size of car crossing the sky, according to testimony in Case 90776 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
 
The incident occurred at 5:38 p.m. on March 14, 2018.
 
“Hovered over center of St. Clair River at about the same height of the bridges,” the witness stated. “Constantly changing reflective colors. As it flew east to Canada, it gained altitude and hid in clouds. I was fishing the St. Clair River at the north end of the water treatment plant. I started fishing around 5:15 p.m. I was sitting there waiting for a bite when I heard a man yelling very loud from the parking lot at the police department which is next to the water treatment plant on the north side. He yelled, ‘Oh wow. Wow.’ Then he kinda laughed excitedly. I immediately looked to the north and seen a silver and gold reflecting object hovering very slowly over the St. Clair River.”
 
The witness said the object looked like a rippling, rectangle-shaped mirror.
 
“It was about the height of the bridges from the water. The object was moving slowly from west to east, which is from Port Huron, Michigan to Sarnia Ontario. The object started flashing very reflective colors that kept changing. It was like a gyroscope of colored mirrors for lack of better words. The object was about the size of a car but was more of a rectangle shape. As it neared the Canadian shoreline, it started to ascend and flew around faster but went towards the clouds. It was very reflective the entire time I observed it. When I first seen it, I tried to make sense of it. I tried to say it’s a plane, a helicopter, a helium balloon, a jet, a drone, but it wasn’t. It didn’t make any sounds and the way it was hovering, and flying was very unique. By the time I realized I was looking at a UFO, it was up over Sarnia flying around and into the clouds. I got a small video clip but that doesn’t do it justice. I couldn’t see the screen on my phone very well because of a glare. I lost sight of the object when it flew in a cloud high up in the sky.
 
“Might be irrelevant, but I saw a U.S. Coast Guard boat heading out into Lake Huron about 20 minutes before I witnessed it. About 30-40 minutes after I lost sight of the object, that same Coast Guard boat was heading back in the river. I don’t know where the object came from, I first seen it over the river.”

An Ohio witness at Munroe Falls reported watching a hovering, triangle-shaped object under 500 feet, according to testimony in Case 90789 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was driving home from a friend’s home along River Road about 10 p.m. on March 11, 2018.

“Nice narrow country road that has some houses and a metropark along the way,” the witness stated. “A few tight turns as well, then running alongside railroad tracks and the Cuyahoga River. After the last tight turn, I saw a brightly lit object in the distance off to the left slightly, right near where the metropark area would be.”

The witness first thought the object was a helicopter.

“Then as I got closer, the object has slowly moved over the road and as I went to drive under it, I noticed no sound. Stopped, turned down my radio and tried looking up through the windshield to see it. My driver’s window is broken, so I opened the door, stuck my head out and looked up. A brightly lit object was overhead at maybe 400-500 feet. Three brilliant blue-white lights in a triangle. One corner also has a strobing reddish light.”

The witness then stepped out of the car (still running, in park) and stood there for maybe another 10-15 seconds.

“It was so brightly lit I could see some details of what looked like a smooth-ish bottom, grayish-colored with some type of geometric pattern covering the surface. The object then started to rotate in place and slowly started to move off the road over the woods to the right, towards the railroad tracks and then the river. I thought then I would try to get a picture. I bent down, reached into the car and grabbed my cell phone from the passenger seat. I was in the car no more than five seconds and was swiping the screen as I stood back up to get the camera on. I looked up, and the object was nowhere to be seen. Stood there another five minutes or more dumbstruck. Perfectly clear night sky. In just a few minutes I had seen numerous high-altitude planes flying the area as well. Am pissed off that I took my eye off of it and did not see it go away. It had to either have blinked off or shot away, as it was moving very slowly when I last saw it, and should have been no more than another few hundred feet away by the time I got the camera app ready. Anyways…that’s what I saw last Sunday night. A brightly lit triangle, right near the city.”

A Delaware witness at Dover reported watching a large object “the shape of the bottom of a half moon,” according to testimony in Case 90968 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was smoking a cigarette on a back porch at 9:30 p.m. on March 10, 2018.

“Looked up into the north-northwest portion of the sky,” the witness stated. “I noticed what I first thought was a half-moon until I realized that it was would have been the bottom half of the moon. That is a view that we do not see on this planet. Looking closer I saw that it had a silvery surface that seemed to give off its own light. Judging from where I was, the object looked as if it was directly over what would be the town of Marydel, DE, right on the Maryland/Delaware border.”

The town is about 10-13 miles away from Dover.

“Next, I noticed several small, white lights, (maybe three or four), one of which was pulsating, maneuvering around the large, bowl-shaped object. They were moving quite slowly in all directions. They would move in one direction, then stop and suddenly move in another direction. I called my adult son outside and we both remarked that it had to be a UFO.”

The two watched the objects for about 15 minutes.

“I even went back inside the house, came back and it was still there. There was absolutely no noise from the objects. This became very obvious when we suddenly could see and hear a helicopter near the objects but could not determine how close it was actually getting. We also witnessed a plane passing by the objects, but at a much greater distance past it. The plane was not anywhere near the objects, just passed by in the same line of sight. I’m certain that the pilots would have seen the objects. Neither my son nor I saw the objects shoot off, fly away or land. One moment they were there, the next moment I looked up and they were gone. Both of us were a bit nervous and confused. After talking about what manmade objects it could have been, we agreed that it did not look like anything we had ever witnessed before. I use a flip phone and did not take a picture. My son’s phone was upstairs and honestly, neither of us even thought about taking a picture at the time of the incident. Neither of us mentioned it to our spouses or to each other again until March 17, 2018, when my daughter and grandson came to visit. Something she said sparked the memory of the event and I talked about it in detail to my wife, daughter and grandson. I still have no idea what it was but would like answers. Thank you.”

A New York witness at Woodstock reported watching a silent, diamond-shaped object, according to testimony in Case 95178 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was driving home from work at about 4 a.m. on March 10, 2018.

“I witnessed the object in the sky,” the witness stated. “I stopped my vehicle and turned off all the lights, rolled my window down and watched it fly across the sky with Overlook Mountain to the north and it flew from west to east direction and made no sound. It was diamond-shaped, head lights at each point. Made no sound whatsoever and the lights blinked regularly like an airplane. The photo shows a sketch of what I saw and the exact direction I was looking with the field in the foreground and over the mountain in the background.”

A Maryland witness at Manchester reported watching a low-flying, triangle-shaped object with a red blinking light in front and while lights at the back, bottom and sides, according to testimony in Case 90710 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was sitting inside his house near a deck door at 11:57 p.m. on March 10, 2018.

“I noticed a light in the corner of my eye coming from outside through the trees,” the witness stated. “I saw a flying object casting a bright light with smaller blinking lights around it. I thought it was just a plane, but as it approached, I knew if it was indeed a plane, it definitely wasn’t an ordinary one. As it got closer, I was expecting to hear the sound of a regular plane engine and all that, but I wasn’t hearing anything.”
The witness decided to step outside on my deck to get a better view and listen closely.

“I still couldn’t hear much. I didn’t notice any noise until it was about 75-90 degrees over my head. It gave off a quiet hum/buzz that sounded like a plane engine, but it was extremely quiet and smooth. It continued flying in a straight line, coming from the northwest and continuing southeast, and as it was directly over me (a couple hundred feet at the most) I noticed two white lights to either side of it that weren’t blinking, one red light on its front, and one white light on its back/bottom, and both the red and white light were alternating blinks. I could see the outline of it, and it was definitely a triangular shape. After researching a little, the only thing I found is a TR-3B or a B-2. It’s just very unusual timing, and we’ve never had anything like this fly over before. We’ve actually seen some larger fighter jets fly over during the day once or twice, but nothing like this. And I’m not too sure of this but having it coming from the northwest where I am located just seems different.”
